Second round!

One of the objectives of joining Project 333 is to tidy up the room used as my office/ guest room/ dressing room/den, and eliminate the two five foot clothes rails covered in sheets that take up space and attract dust. Finally, after four years living here, a proper wardrobe and chest of drawers are due to be delivered from Ikea next week. With this in mind, I decided to do some more work on sorting through the clothes and packing away the summer things. This proved to be surprisingly difficult, although I know that many people pack away their out of season clothes, it’s something I have never done before and it seemed a little bit weird.

First, I needed somewhere to store the out of season items, so I dragged the large suitcase out from under the bed. I’d previously stowed a few undecided items in there, but seeing them again confirmed my decision that they were destined for the clothes bank and a new black bag was quickly filled. I’ve packed away the ‘exception outfits’ – let’s hope we won’t have to go to another funeral for a while, and an ‘invited out to dinner’ skirt and top that I last wore three Christmas’s ago. That might make it to the black bag next time. Next I packed away the summer linens and anything else not on this season’s 333 capsule list. The new season capsule is now confined to a short section of hanging rail and four wire basket drawers.

Winter capsule

The clear out has not been restricted to the clothes. Once I get the bit between my teeth there’s nothing I like more than a good sort out. This week’s target has been all the old, unused, redundant electrical and electronic items. We had a large collection of old computers, mobile phones, MP3 players and devices, plus what seemed to be the world’s largest collection of usb leads. Of course, it’s important to make sure any computer memory is wiped clean and when I couldn’t remember the password to start up the old desktop the OH resorted to taking the side off, removing the hard drive and smashing it up with a lump hammer. I think NASA could still retrieve the data, but I’m sure it will be OK to take down to the dechetterie.

Once the new storage is installed, my next target is shoes, bags and miscellaneous accessories. I started Project 333 excluding outer wear and shoes, but this is an area crying out for attention. Hopefully next year I’ll be able to produce a capsule that includes shoes and coats, making the daily selection of what to wear even simpler.
