Time for the Spring capsule

Spring officially started yesterday with the Vernal Equinox, so it’s time to choose a new capsule wardrobe. The weather is difficult at this time of year. We always seem to have a few false starts, with a couple of lovely warm days when you can put on a short-sleeved t-shirt and have lunch outside, followed by a day of biting winds that has you hunting out the gloves and scarf again.

The winter capsule was a great success. I never once felt that I didn’t have anything to wear; in fact, sometimes even having a choice of thirty-three items seemed too many. During winter, I weeded out the majority of the non-technical clothing, ordered a few new things from my favourite brand Rohan and cut down the overall total to less than a hundred clothes items. It’s interesting to look back at the original winter capsule list and see that many of items didn’t make it through from November to mid-March. Virtually all of the cotton and wool items found their way to the recycling bank. I did wear the pure wool ‘Sarah Lund’ jumper once and I’ll still keep it, despite the fact that strictly it does not meet the technical criteria. It did prove that I don’t have a wool allergy!

It’s been quite easy to select the spring capsule with just a few alterations to the final winter capsule that had evolved over the past four months. I started by removing the thicker winter fleeces, the thermal tops, and cords, then I selected my favourite new Rohan tops and some thinner trousers. I’ve been reading a lot of Project 333 blogs lately and one thing that stands out is the great advice to always wear clothes that you love. I’ll be trying not to save anything for best, but to live in the moment with clothes, and life too.

Here’s the Spring capsule list – thirty clothes items, including for the first time outer coats, and to make up the numbers to the magic thirty-three - a suggestion I picked up from one of the project blogs - a line each for shoes, scarf and bag. All the colours mix and match and there’s plenty of scope for layering. I’ve included one smart outfit with the new Rohan travel linen trousers, patterned travel shirt and linen jacket – I just hope I get the chance to go somewhere to wear it! It’s impossible to know if this capsule will last the full three months - that rests in the hands of the weather gods.
